In 1982, writer and game designer Mike Suchcicki had an intriguing goal: He wanted to create a role-playing game that could played by only two people.
“Most RPGs feature a game master, or dungeon master, who controls the game for a group of players,” Mike says. “I wanted something that easily could be played by just two people, with each player acting as game master for the other.”
The post-apocalyptic scenario he designed for the game, with zombies chasing after the hapless players, evolved into a world infested by the giant, green monsters known as Ghouls.
“In my notes I had written down the word ‘ghoulish.’ When I looked at the notes later, I read the word as ‘ghoulash,‘ and the name, and the concept of Ghouls, stuck,” Mike says.
That two-person RPG, originally titled GHOULASH: The Last Game on Earth, was refined and streamlined over the years and eventually posted on Ghoulash.com. It was downloaded and played by gamers around the world, and was translated by fans into six languages (including Hungarian Ghoulash!). The game has been used by teachers as an aid to teach everything from math to English as a second language. It’s been featured and reprinted in magazines in the U.S., Great Britain and Australia.

The game, now called GHOULASH: The Game of Pen & Paper Peril, is played entirely on paper, using specially designed Game Charts. You can download a sample chart and rules here.
Each player takes a chart and hides the Ghouls, Holes, Debris and First-Aid Kits on one of the two grids, known as the Obstacle Grid. Then, you take turns describing your journey through the other grid, the Movement Grid. As you move, your opponent follows along on their Obstacle Grid and tells you what items or obstacles you’ve encountered:
“As you enter the building, you fall into a Hole.”
“At H-13 is a First-Aid Kit.”
If you fall in a Hole, you lose a turn. If you encounter Debris, you suffer a wound.
If you encounter a Ghoul you must fight it. Hit its Weak Spot and it’s destroyed, but if miss you get a wound. Receive 12 wounds and you die!
Be the first to destroy all eight Ghouls and you win!
